Migrate From Costly Applications and Databases and Onto AWS Aurora

This webinar is about achieving the database freedom from Amazon Aurora. Mr. Chuck Edwards, the Global Partner Lead of Amazon Web Services briefs about how database freedom is achieved. At 0:31, he begins the webinar by stating the challenges of the old-guard commercial databases.

The prominent challenges are the high cost, proprietary, high-lock in and punitive licensing. At 1:53, he briefs that a large proportion of people now prefer open-source databases like Postgresql, SQL, etc. Obtaining good performance on the open-source databases is comparatively more difficult than in the case of commercial-grade databases.

The prominent benefits of Amazon Aurora

At 3:16, he lists out the significant key benefits of Amazon Aurora which includes a high level of security, performance, scalability, availability, and durability. At 5:03, Mr. Chuck Edwards elaborates on some of the best use cases of Amazon Aurora. The first one being the scenario of the migration from commercial engines, high throughput workloads, building Software as a Service (SaaS) apps and reaching scaling limits. At 6:22 he briefs that with Database freedom, reliability, scalability, performance and minimal cost factors are ensured. He further elaborates that Database Freedom results in innovative solutions with expertise solutions and workshop.

At 8:56, Mr. Mihir Patel, the VP of cloud architecture continues the webinar on the concept of migrating from costly databases to the cloud with the help of the Apps Associates. He begins by stating that App Associates was founded in the year 2002 in the US, Europe, and India with around 295 active clients. At 10:03, he points out to the slide which depicts the migration of your Oracle environment to the AWS (Amazon Web Services).

The Oracle database gets migrated to the Amazon Aurora with multiple options. At 12:25, he briefs about the proven phased approach involved in the migrating process.

Steps involved in the migration process

The migrating process includes the discover or building a roadmap, configuring the AWS environment, migrate, testing, production on AWS and the management step. At 15L06, he elaborates on the four major steps to success. Evaluation is to be comprised of discovering, assessing, prioritizing and analysis. At 16:13, Mr. Mihir Patel states that optimization is a continuous process and needs to be kept in check during the migration process. He adds on that the deployment step would include the process of training, testing, transition, and production.

From 17:02, he summarizes the steps involved in the migration from Oracle to Amazon Aurora. The first step would be to migrate the schema first using the AWS Schema Conversion Tool. The second step is to migrate the data with the AWS Database Migration Service (DMS). At 19:04, he briefs that Amazon Aurora is advantageous as it takes care of the time-consuming database management tasks, no license cost, great native integration with the cloud ecosystem, great performance and migration tools. In this webinar, the concept of how the migration happens from the traditional time-consuming databases to the cloud happens with the Apps Associates is explained.
